Our Story

Last year, I decided to fly back to Houston, Texas to surprise my family from college. I was especially excited to see my little sister, Sarah, who recently began seventh grade. Upon my arrival to Houston, I jumped in my car and raced off to the middle school to pick up Sarah from school. As I anxiously sat in the carline waiting for her, I pictured the rest of our fun-filled day.

After a significant amount of time passed, I finally saw her sauntering slowly out of the middle school with a dull look on her face. Her head was down and an unexcited expression filled her face as she stepped into my car. Being the overprotective sister I am, I began to question her prying into her private life to understand where these emotions were coming from. After much persuasion, Sarah admitted that her principal pulled her into the office to advise against running for class president because they did not want a girl to be the face of the class. To make matters worst, the principal advised her to look into the drama club or cheerleading as thats where he felt girls her age thrived.

Sick to my stomach, I dropped Sarah off at home and decided to clear my head in a 45 minute hot yoga class. Confused, sad, and worried I pondered ways that I could help my little sister, yearning to protect her from such hurt. Anger built up inside me as I realized that the school system has failed to empower young girls and debunk such stereotypes.

Arriving to the yoga studio, I laid my mat in a quiet corner and sat there in stillness as my frustration continued to rise. As the class began, and we started flowing through different positions, I felt this stress and anxiety start to unravel inside of me. Locked into each movement, I felt an unfamiliar sense of peace come to me as my mind and body intensified its connection. Suddenly, I had the solution.

After my awakening in the studio, I called my dad. I explained to him what had happened to my sister and told him that I had a crazy solution. Unfazed by my seemingly outlandish business idea, my dad simply agreed to make some calls. The rest was history.

Yoga for the Youth opened its doors in December of 2023 headed by my father and I. The studio aimed to help adolescent girls tackle stereotypes and empower one another through mindful Yoga with a supportive network of women. After the initial launch and lots of trial and error, we have successfully fostered a united community in which girls can feel free to exercise self-expression.

Dedicated to the education and growth of young girls, we hope that your daughter, sisters, and friends to join our community. Movement that empowers.
